The kinds of wounds that we treat at the wound care center are, first of all, by definition greater than 6 weeks old. That's what defines a chronic wound. But we treat a whole variety of wounds from diabetic wounds venous ulcers, ulcers from poor circulation, ulcers from inflammation, traumatic ulcers, people who have fallen and taken pie-pieces of skin off their legs...we treat non-healing surgical wounds and we treat pressure ulcers, people who have been in bed for a long period of time who develop ulcers on their pressure points, hips, rear ends, sacrums, we treat a whole variety of ulcers.
If you're a diabetic and you know that you have problems with wound healing, or if you're a person with poor circulation and you know that you're going to have problems with circulation- with wound healing, then you should come to us almost immediately. There's no reason to wait and add problems with the wound and then come in.
Well the procedures that we do are different than what would be done in your GP's office, for example, or done by your podiatrist. We're quite specialized; we are extremely up to date on all modern procedures and we look at the whole patient, so that when you come to us we don't just treat your wound, we're treating the entire patient. But that being said, we have access, for example, to skin substitutes, we have access to certain growth factors, and we also have access to hyperbaric oxygenation, so that if your wound is suitable, you have to go nowhere else, we can treat the wound. But basically, what we're involved in is what we call "limb salvage." We're trying to make sure that people don't lose toes, legs--you know, every diabetic who comes to us is afraid, you know...in the back of their mind, they're afraid that they're gonna lose their leg and what we do is try to save- preserve limbs, save legs and again, we have every modern modality to do that. The length of treatment is quite variable. Obviously there are people, patients who come in that we can have healed up in two to three weeks. There are other patients who will have much longer prolonged courses. But what's important to us is that they can live their lives with their wounds. So in other words, we need to get these people back to an everyday kind of life with, for example, a small bandage. We let people go out and play golf again. We have housewives doing, you know, picking up their kids at school but, you know, it may take more than a month to heal some of these wounds. But while its going on, while this is happening, we want the patients to feel that they're leading a normal life.
